Toy giant and purveyor of fun for all ages Toys R Us is being a major buzzkill right now. The corporation has chosen to go after a small medical cannabis dispensary in Michigan for using the name “Buds R Us.” The dispensary’s logo also features a cartoon giraffe smoking a joint, which bears a striking resemblance to Toys R Us’ famous mascot Geoffery the Giraffe.

The owners received a cease and desist letter from a law firm representing the company. The letter claims that Buds R Us is stealing their intellectual property by using the likeness of Geoffrey the Giraffe. “I thought it was a joke to tell you the truth, like really Toys R Us coming at us, we’re just a small business out here,” said the owner Frankie (no last name was given) to a local news affiliate. They said that they thought that the giraffe smoking a joint would be funny (it is).
Buds R Us’ attorney Paul Tylenda said to local news “I think that with the tongue and cheek understanding of the logo, I don’t think anybody is going to confuse the two companies.” The owners say that they have no problem changing the name, and that they already have some other names in mind.
This is not the first time a large corporation has chosen to go after a cannabis business. The makers of Gorilla Glue are suing GG Strains for copyright infringement for using their name for the popular strain Gorilla Glue#4. This looks like the beginning of a disturbing trend among large corporations going after small businesses. Dispensaries whose names bear a resemblance to familiar brand names can expect the same to happen to them.
