Most people are too lazy and are scared to make it but if you know how to it really spices up the usual bowl since i only own one pipe, a lil glass peice DIY or Die

smoking technology has just come so far. Home made stuff was all the rage in the 70s and 80s because there isn't much difference between a honey bear bong (yeah I had one too) and an acrylic. But now there is a big difference between a glass on glass diffused bong and a soda bottle bong. For one thing people keep their pipes clean these days, so everyone uses glass. Which is a big step up from the days where people never cleaned their bong and only changed the water every couple of days. Also it just looks so much better. From a non smokers point of view a clean glass bong is kinda like a wine glass or whatever. A glued together piece of gatorade bottle with a bit of green garden hose and a brass plumbing fixture shoved into it just looks so terrible. Hard to look like an adult with that sittin on your coffee table.

light bulbs are bad cus of the gases that are sprayed in them to help preserve the filaments, but DIY pieces(if done right) are awesome!
And then theres me, i have a couple really expensive pieces but i find using my homemade pieces very nice now and then, its like building furniture for me sure you could go out and buy that nice expensive coffee table, or you could spend some time to create something almost as nice if not better, hand crafted with time and effort you and no one else has put time into. but thats me, i never smoke from plastic so health and all around tacky ghettoness isnt my style.
Thanks for all the input. It still surprises me that so many are against DIY. I personally only have 2 store bought pieces just because I don't see a point to having a shelf full. I have a Proto Pipe and a little glass piece about the same size. And truth be told I use my Proto daily and my glass only when I test out a fresh bag. Otherwise the Prot with the lid dose me just fine as I usually only one or two hit it threw out the day and I don't want to light a whole bowl for 2 hits. I don't like glass because it breaks and it could break in my pocket, ouch! I have money, thats not an issue. I don't think DIY has much to do with being poor; its about not being helpless if you don't have your piece. Or, if you broke a pipe use some of the parts to make a custom bong out of something. I agree that some people are stupid I watched a guy use a plastic pen like a crack pipe to smoke bud once. I don't see what being clean has to do with it I have NEVER let my pieces get too dirty weather DIY you store bought. Quality of todays weed being better was brought up too. I have only ever smoked green. When I was young sometimes it might have been shake but it was still Humboldt county green shake. I smoked brown once just to try it. It sucked. I never went back. I don't know I guess I'm just old.
They SELL honey bear pieces now. Basically it's just a honey bear with a metal downstem + bowl and a carb on the back. Mostly people laugh at kids with home made pieces because they aren't old enough to go into a smoke shop and buy one. And don't worry Old Fart, people still use apples. It's the simplest, most efficient way of making a home made pipe without having all those burning plastic/glue/metal fumes mixing in with the taste of your delicious herb. But for home made pieces, it stops at fruits and vegetables. I would compare the home-made-piece haters to a wine aficionado seeing someone drinking an expensive wine in a plastic cup with ice cubes.
My first time smoking was out of a homemade piece. Ever since then I have been working on homemade pieces from parachutes, waterfalls, bubblers, and any other items I can find sitting around to smoke out of. I am always aware of the health risks and I also like the 'uniqueness' without the pricetag.
i smoke out of glass because im an adult. Why use a can, or coke bottle when I can just spend money on my favorite activity like any normal fucking dude?
Anyone who likes making DIYs should invest in a glass-on-glass slide and the shortest glass on glass downstem they can find just so the smoke has time to disperse heat before passing over any questionable parts.
When smoker's realized the cons of smoking harmful materials, its funny because I mean you are SMOKING, so its not good for you, world won't end if you make a tinny or a gb or any homemade piece. And yeah out of apples is a classic, thats not harmful really haha. I've never seen a pipe out of a snuff can, how do you do that? Idk if I'd want to because I hate chew, but gotta be an interesting concept That being said, I smoke mainly out of glass now, just the nicest way. I do have a socket in a cap for a lung, but its so fuckin harsh. I do have some great McGyver pieces though, one time me and 3 friends made a pipe out of PVC pipes that had 2 bowl pieces and 4 tubes so we all got torched simultaneously haha. Also, my buddy used to have house so we would skip school and fashion up the biggest GB's and lungs we could make. Had an industrial size Hawain Punch one that got such big hits you couldn't even finish them. And we would all get so baked..... Miss the good old days
I'm 19, turning 20 in two months.... so if thats old by your standards, I guess I am indeed an "old" guy But another quality creative piece we made was we took a pen and made a bowl on top, then got it through a coconut. Used another pen to inhale from, and the milk from the coconut as the bong water! Was pretty cool and we took it to a party night we made it and got smoked up all night from the novelty.... but after a few hours it was fuckin nasty hahah
