Thats what came to my mind. Looks like probably one of the first fritted pieces ever made. Fritted glass is basically broken/crushed/beads of glass that are heated up just enough to get them to start melting together, leaving hundreds of tiny air passages in it.
Yeah I wasn't too familiar with them. Simple and kinda shitty seeming but at the same time kinda smart and innovative.
