Ventoux's Organic Blue Cheese in Coco

Discussion in 'Organic Grow Journals' started by ventoux, Aug 3, 2010.

  1. Cool man! I love it when somebody wants to dissect and discuss the root formation inside a #2 smart pot (or any other container for that matter)! You go ventoux! Bring it! LOL!

    Nice budZ dude!

  2. Now for the real good stuff.... root porn :hello:

This one had a great looking root system. Which of course made me think that I should have left a branch on the bottom and went for a re-veg... hindsight is 20/20....

Definitely filled the #2 smartpot nicely. Completely spread throughout the medium, top to bottom, side to side. No gaps along the bottom sides like the #3 & #5... liking the #2s. I also liked the coloration of the roots compared to the blue cheese from a while back. These were much lighter in color. Not sure if there is anything there, but these sure looked healthier... Another thing to ponder is the addition of the mycorrhizae at the beginning instead of halfway through... Love those changing variables, gives me a rabbit to chase while I am planning the next run...

Lastly, if anyone rememebers, I wondered about a percieved "salt" build-up in the coco last time. I figured it out, side dressing of K-mag & Limestone that hadn't completely broken down....

hey Poss, noticed your post while I was typing

  3. V, long time! Congrats on the harvest, great smoke report and LOVE that root porn. :D Looks like you did not miss a beat in your away time! Awesome job! :hello:

  4. Way nice roots ventoux! I am locked on to ‘root system development' like a june bug to a light bulb. So let's dissect it so-to-speak.

What was the total life-cycle of your grow in the #2 pots versus your grow in the #3 and #5 pots? I don't have any science or research to back me up but my theory is that within the confines of a 90 – 120 day life-cycle MJ will not develop a root system robust enough to fill either one of a #3 or a #5 container and that space and materials is wasted in that time frame. I propose that a #2 container is sufficient for our 90 – 120 day needs. Wonder what your thoughts are?

If I recall correctly the mycorrhizae growth takes about 6 weeks minimum. You adding them to your #2 pots early was the winner against half-way through. Lesson learned there for all of us.

    Nice dude!

  5. Thanks MrsEd. Been worked like a dawg lately. Good to see you! Tell Ed to take a break from work and get back to the city.

This run was somewhere near 80 days or so from sprout...

Funny, when I tore up the #5 smartpots I used with soil I remember being really excited. I was expecting to see this MASSIVE root ball throughout the whole thing.... I was a little disappointed. The plants grew well, but did not have the root mass I would have liked. I will say the main root stem was larger than what I witnessed in the #3 & #2. That could be because I let them veg until they showed sex on their own... They were pretty bushy when I flipped the switch to 12/12.

The #3s were 80-90% full on the last run. I do think they would have filled in more had I let them veg a bit longer. I also wonder if there is a difference between clone and seed as far are root mass??? Those plants also had some serious issues with their grower, which I am sure impacted their root development.

    The #2s were full.

So, long story short, I think I am going to stay away from the #5. #2s fit great in my grow area, in fact I am going to pick up some more #2s next time I am in the big city. That being said, if I am going to run some long flowering varieties, or a ScrOG, I'll probably reach for the #3s.

One thing I am considering is that the larger the grow container (#3), the easier it is to maintain a stable growing environment. Sort of makes sense to me... Looks like I am writing myself into going with at least one #3 with the new mix to see what happens.

These seeds were inoculated right from the start. I did the paper towel method and used water in which I had added mycorrhizae spores. I then sprinkled a dash of spores over the seeds for good measure... you know, to be on the safe side...

Thanks for dropping over Poss!

  6. Trips 2 is a beauty, and she had a very impressive root ball.

  7. Thanks Alatar! Need to check over at your place to see how Bleu is coming along.

  8. Thanks ventoux. I get all excited talking about root development LOL!

Filed away for future reference! :hello:

  9. found this today... remember this show being very wet...

    those were the days....

  10. nice pull...got an estimate on final weight?

  11. I was going to weigh it up today but got sidetracked.... I'll find the scale and do 'er up tomorrow.

  12. YIELD REPORT:

As I was saying, the "normal" looking plant was the p4p best producer I had to date using organics. In a #2 smartpot, after a good three days of hanging, and 1 in the jar, she weighed in at 38.3 grams. Pretty darn close to an ounce and a half.

    SMOKE REPORT:

It works. The smell on this one is more cheese-y, with a hint of sweetness. Very pleasant on the olfactory system... Sticky. The smoke is very smooth. Effects are like a locomotive steaming down the tracks... It's coming, and there ain't no way your going to stop it once it starts...

  13. Nice pull, Ventoux, the sweet outcome of a bold experiment. Those are beautiful buds. Enjoy that smoke. You certainly worked for it.

  14. UPDATE:

The last of the trips is winding down... She's a funky one for sure. Never seen the like. Really weird flower set on this one... I started calling her Quasimodo due to her hunchback appearance and defiance of growing straight....

    pretty funky eh?

  15. She is a funky chic. But they can be fun. ;)

  16. Yeh man... gotta say it'sa phreak but it's kewl! Wonder if those little calyx bulbs are full of resin?

  17. yep.

She's a super-phreak. and you know they are... very sticky.

I was thinking I could trim 'em, cure 'em, then just roll 'em up. They are about as thick as a finger and just as long... Odd, maybe. Convenient, heck yeah!

  18. Ok... this is a fricking nightmare to trim:mad:

  19. The Chop:

Trips # 3 is chopped and hanging. She was a stinker. Very diesel-ish. I learned quite a bit from this one. As odd as she looked, she was healthy (by comparison to previous attempts ) So cheers to her, funky leaf structure and all....

    Last photo w/ leaves.

What a pain-in-the-a** to trim. Seriously.
    trchop2.jpg
    All done.

  20. Well, it's official. The room is now empty and the Organic (insert strain) in Coco experience has come to and end. So, thank you: LumperDawgz, Possuum38North, Alatar, Mr & Mrs. Ed, Chunkdaddyo, Unoit, and everyone else that popped in and helped along the way. I can't thank y'all enough for all the kind words, knowledge, and shared expertise.
