Tired of newbs making bongs.

Discussion in 'DIY and Homemade' started by The Captain K, Mar 15, 2011.

  1. My friend, while we were high kept ranting on, that making a bong out of water bottle and aluminum foil would be great, and work. I kept telling him, a flame near plastic of any sort is unhealthy, along with aluminum foil giving the risk of Alzheimer link. He is just .. UGH! All these people .. they need to learn to use the herb correctly. GLASS and only GLASS for bongs. :)

  2. Dude....it's like a rite of passage for kids who are new to the herb to try to make their own smoking devices. Live and let live.

  3. True, even I remember making a plastic bottle shotgun pipe. Oh man, those were the times, although now that I think about it, it probably wasn't healthy.

  4. The first time I ever smoked was out of a home-made bong. Plastic water bottle and empty pen with a tinfoil bowl, jus like you described haha. I think that was the first and last time I've ever smoked off of tinfoil, or plastic for that matter.

Keep in mind though most people don't wait until they're "adults" (18 yrs old) to try weed for the first time. However most headshops won't sell glass to anyone under 18, so home-mades are inevitable. Personally I'd obviously never do it again but as Will said it's simply part of the learning process.

Kids with older siblings who smoke are lucky though. I would have LOVED to have started on some of the crazy diffused pieces out there today. When I first tried herb there was no such thing as a perc PERIOD. I remember when Ph(x) came out with the Trinity (double dome perc) and revolutionized the game.

  5. I used to make gravity bongs all the time and the bowl would be a socket fit to a 2 liter with foil in it as a screen.... hit like crazy, but such bad news, especially since instead of water we'd use a gallon ziplock bag on the bottom, so the bud would cash through and burn it a lot. I can't believe some of the crazy pipes I used to make and think that they were totally cool and safe to smoke out of... and almost all of them had tin foil incorporated at some point... i'm glad to be out of my youth.

  6. Okay if your using foil and water bottles thats just a little ghetto..I mean i admit i have done it once or twice when i was just starting. But there isnt anything wrong with making a home made especially if it is airtight and everything. I said this in another thread it brings out the inner creative part in you.

  7. I love how your attitude did a total 360..

Just teach him how to make better homeades..
i used to love making and smoking out of homeades, eventually i grew out of it, as will he

  8. I don't use aluminum, but I use plastic 2 litre bottles for waterfall bongs. But I use a glass bowl.

  9. was gonna say calm the fuck down it's a right of passage, but then it seems you immediately changed your mind, so i guess that's

    /thread

  10. Not everyone can afford glass.

  11. i def don't agree with aluminum, but I still hit up my waterfall (plastic bottle with socket/brass screen) every once in a while. nothing wrong with homemades as long as they're not a health hazard. i've seen some crazzzzy ass ones on gc that id love to toke out of :smoke:

  12. Pretty much, eh?

  13. There is no link between smoking with aluminum foil and alzheimer's. The way that rumor started was because alzheimer's patients have more aluminum ions in their brain. As you should know, association does not mean causation. Moreover, it is not known whether the excessive aluminum ions in the brain is a cause of or a symptom of alzheimer's. Please don't perpetuate myths.

  14. 360 would make it so he was facing the way he started so it was a 180

i have to ask though, how can you people rag on him and tell him to calm down, when he said his friend kept ranting. none of us know just how many times he calmly explained why not to, or weather or not his friend listens to him when he tries to explain this useful info to his friend. Maybe he cares enough about his friend to not want him to even try it, because he knows the damage it can possibly cause and not want to risk it even possibly happening to his friend. Now Im not saying others are wrong about it being a right of passage, im just saying we dont know the WHOLE situation and most of us probably dont even know the individuals involved in the situation.

  16. To be honest I just keep heat away from the plastic. I always use glass for my bowl. Then vinyl for tubing as it doesn't release toxins (says it right on the package). When I'm not using glass bottles to make homemades I do use plastic, but believe me it's not "newb".

I love making frappucino bottles into bubblers, and people love seeing them. Probably my go to homemade, and at this point I've cleaned up my technique making them that they are very presentable.

My Tip and Number #1 RULE
Do not let any plastic get near heat. If a piece gets really hot it needs to have some distance before meeting plastic.

A test for this is that I use hot glue and electric tape to make seals. If the hot glue gets soft at all too much heat is in the area. Areas like the 9.5mm glass bowl meeting the vinyl tube are places I check. Put a drop of hot glue near the bottom of the bowl and then take a few rips. The glue shouldn't have gotten soft at all. Thus you know the smoke is cool enough by the time it reaches the vinyl.

Really though the main part that needs to be heat safe is the bowl area. Once the smoke gets past that it's cool enough that it won't recieve any new toxins from the plastic that might be used.

  17. Is your friend a seasoned toker? If not then I would have to agree with some of the other members on this thread; it's all part of a learning experience... If they are a seasoned toker however, they don't really have an excuse hahahaha =P

Do they still insist on making their own piece(s)?

  18. its not that bad

i have glass by the way

your not going to die, or even notice anything different then if you smoked out of glass. ive done it plenty of times, and so have plenty of people i know and don't know.

  19. so lets make a new sticky for this
official how to make a bong thread
    ????
    good ideas?

  20. Thank you for pointing this out. I was dropping in to mention just this fallacy.

I will agree that plastic fumes are not good for the lungs, but the scientific jury is still out on the aluminum for now.

By the way, my mom has alzheimer's, and is a guinea pig for a drug that removes and prevents the formation of new plaques, so the issue of the disease is of intense interest to me.
