ebay is a good place to find briar wood. if you want local then look for a craft store that has pipe kits
Man guys I just made some great profit from these. Sold it to a sucker for 50 dollars! It was a simple one with 420 embossed on the side. I spent no money making it (got it from a tree branch) and me and a bud tried it out. He liked it so much he gave me 50 dollars the next day for it! Gonna buy some good weed tonight to celebrate
No offense, but he got ripped off haha. I do plan on making one using this tutorial, though. I'll post pics when I'm done.
Ok well I tried my hand at pipecraft today. My dad owns a small wood-crafting business so I have access to a lot of wood-working tools Started with a branch of maple http://i.imgur.com/pow3i.jpg Cut it down a bit. I was planning on making the bigger piece into a Gandalf-esque pipe. http://i.imgur.com/Ta1YO.jpg I realized I didn't have a long enough drill bit though, so I had to make it shorter A little more cutting http://i.imgur.com/Uspd6.jpg Anyways, I messed up on the crappy Gandalf one; while drilling the stem, I dug through the side. The walls were too thin Other one. Drilled the holes FIRST! Haha http://i.imgur.com/Qb0DA.jpg Cut it down some more. I don't currently have any balsamic and white vinegar, so I just torched it and oiled it up. I totally screwed up on this one. But for my first wooden pipe ever made, I think I did okay. http://i.imgur.com/XTsFl.jpg I also cut too close to the bowl lol. http://i.imgur.com/2nxsu.jpg Decided to make another one. Much happier with this one. http://i.imgur.com/OuAFf.jpg I've never been a fan of carbs, so I didn't put any on either of them. I still need to mix honey+ash in the bowls though. (To OP) I've got a question about using a torch. Why is it necessary? To dry out the wood? I've heard a good way to get rid of impurities and such is to boil the wood, is torching just an alternative? Overall I had fun with this project. I'm studying to become an engineer, so making stuff and figuring out how things work is something I love. I'll definitely be making more pipes in the future. Nice tutorial
Torching hardens and fireproofs the wood, as well as making it look nice and yes, taking away impurities. If you dont want to torch, boil it and find some pipe varnish.
Alright thanks. You can definitely notice the increased hardness after torching. With maple, anyways. Just finished this one
