Hi guys! As you know, 420 came and went, and it marked the first time I've ever made a homemade bong. Smoking out of something I made myself was a fantastic feeling, and I think I'm becoming addicting to building fastamagorical gizmos of DIY goodness. Today, whilst in lab, I "picked up" a fantastic piece of glassware that I think will serve as an excellent ash catcher. However, as you may have noticed, the downstem isn't exactly long enough. To circumvent this, I've done this: It works great, but I have a couple concerns. 1) There is a strong rubber taste/smell coming from the hose. Is this going to be bad for me when I light a bowl? 2) Will the tube get hot as a downstem / release toxic vapors as I smoke? Lastly, the holes in the "bowl" are very very tiny: Would this be a problem? As of now, I can breathe through the hose with little difficulty, but would it blocked up with tar/resin as I smoke? Any input from you guys would be of great help to me. Thank you so much!
Just gona dive in a little bit here .... #1 What is that bowl even made out of ? Can't tell very well from the picture almost looks like plastic of some sort which is a big no no or possibly ceramic? ... #2 The small holes isn't the problem there it may get clogged easily though unless you thoroughly cleaned it often. #3 The hose your using in my opinion looks like automotive hose which no matter what you do its going to give a rubber taste to it and that hosing 'probably' has other chemicals in the rubber or something dont quote me on that part just i know when i deal with that kind of hose it even leaves a smell on my hands. Your better off getting some rubber hose from the pet section in your local store such as Wal-Mart they have cheap fish tank hose and a couple different diameters works well. Love the glassware though.
It's a ceramic Hirsh funnel. I would never smoke out of a plastic bowl LOL. I did change the hosing to vinyl hosing. No taste and it's clear which is pretty cool. I ended up putting a pipe screen on top of the funnel to prevent as much clogging as possible and it worked like a charm. Thank you for your input!
If you can taste the rubber, I'd say exnay on the rubber hose. Look for a metal tube to raise the bowl off the rubber a bit, maybe even a deep wall socket would work.
