R.V or Bus?

  1. I've had this thought a lot. Road tripping with my boys is definitely something I want to do, though I foresee myself going the pop-up camper route - more of a glorified tent than a full RV. I prefer to 'rough it' anyway, but I would think the biggest issue with some of those larger motorhomes is accessibility and parking. You could be limiting yourself based on the places that can accommodate a vehicle of that size.

When my wife was pregnant with our first son, we were travelling across the country in an Econovan. That piece of shit almost cost me my marriage, so in the future, a little bit more luxury will be on tap.

Food for thought: when not in use, you could go the Breaking Bad route and use it for... "cooking".

  2. My brother has a motorhome..40 ft, diesel pusher. It's nice, couple slide outs, loaded with everything. He only travel's with his wife and 2 boys..and they have plenty of room..but traveling with 4 kids like you..might be different story..
Price wise, his was over $200,000 cost of a house, but again it's a house on wheels.

I'll see what I can find for pics of his.
As far as driving it, pretty easy if you have driven anything beyond a small car. We have actually swapped driving while on highway and easily at that.

  3. Some of my buddies have these Rv things, many build their own, as its cheap very cheap, the best I've seen or the most popular has been ex school buses even city transit buses can be got very cheap

IMO 1x single bed space per person..means you can fit a lot into a bus

the way this virus is going you could have a 30 bed mansion in Hollywood for the price of a bus .....lol
....and be living next to me and the GC admins .....lolololol (whynot: they make enough of the adverts)

  10. Obviously can spend all sorts of cash on them, new ones fully loaded cost over a million dollars for some of the 40' and bigger.

75k get you a lot out of a used one. My brother got his new years ago and was around 150-200k I don't remember exact numbers..think his is already 20 years or so old.

All depends on what you want to spend. Knowing you have 4 kids you will need fair amount of space, not just sleeping but storage too.

Just saw this one..75 grand..15 years old but looks nice..
As I said, all depends on what you are willing to spend.

  11. To some it matters more than others, but keep in mind that a school bus is going to ride like a school bus.
Of course, the longer the wheel base the smoother the ride, at the expense of maneuverability from a shorter wheel base.
I could be happy with "truck" suspension for the difference in cost.

no RV I've seen has any hydraulic? levelling? system

  13. I think most do have self leveling hydraulics..
I know my brothers dose..soon as you shut it off the hydraulics kick in, even has a little "bubble" on dash showing its level.

  15. My brothers bus is nice, even though he has had it for while, it's still overkill. It truly is a house on wheels and there are many people who live in them.
We use it often for weekend fishing trips..even at 40' long, we will haul boat behind it and have to use bus to launch boat..get some funny looks at boat dock when it's being backed in lol

He and his family take it on summer vacation for a couple weeks during his shut down at work. They been all over the country in it. Nice thing is you really don't have to park at a campground if you don't want to. They have slept in grocery store parking lots or even parked in small town on main Street..
He uses it as a regular vehicle at times..10 Mile trip to some sort of play area for kids bdays are common..can load up 20 of kids friends in it and go.
Isn't awful to drive either, but parts and maintenance are a bitch.

  16. I would personally rather just pick up a used RV. They can cost ridiculous amounts of money, but you can also find used ones with low miles for a super value. It is one of those things many people will buy based on a fantasy but then end up never really using. Deals can be found on relatively low mileage RVs for less than $20k.
