So I have a piece of a chemistry glassware kit that I wanted to make into a pipe. I added a screen and that's all that's needed from a construction standpoint. To be safe, I put a lighter to the ends of the piece to make sure they were safe. Sure enough, soot or something like it developed on the edges of the both ends of the piece. If i remember correctly, there was also some black-ish smoke that came out. Anyone know what this is, and how to get rid of it? All help is appreciated. Thanks!
okay, so some research: the piece is a drying tube from Aldrich glassware and it's made of PYREXPLUS, whatever that is.
Well Pyrex is borosilicate which is completely safe and actually what most bongs are made of. However I'm not sure about "PYREXPLUS" as to whether or not anything has been done to it. Was it used for anything or is it straight from a set? If it was I would try putting it in some kind of cleaning solution.
alright, thanks. i'm actually not sure it's pyrexplus now that i look further into it, but if there's no way for the black smoke to go away then i guess i can't use this. i was really looking forward to it.
after submerging this thing in alcohol and taking it out and rinsing/drying it, the black smoke has gone away. what do you guys think?
okay, after talking to the chemist i got this from, it's safe to smoke out of. we hit a few bowls out of it and it's awesome, you see the smoke cloud up like a bong.
