Hey guys, I just made this wood pipe I'm pretty proud of that I'd like you guys to look at. I cut the top off of an old wood broom in my garage. Now, I'm horrible at any woodworking so I'm surprised how well it turned out. Well, after sawing off the piece (about an inch longer than I wanted it, just in case), I took the longest and thinnest drill bit I had and drilled a hole from the top to as far as it would go. I measured how far that went and marked it on the pipe. Then I took the thickest drill bit I had (which wasn't very thick at all) and drilled a hole to meet that one (which to my surprise, they met up). This was my basic pipe. Then I realized that my bowl was way to small to fit much in it, so i had to get the drill and drill around it to try and make it bigger. It was really clumsy but made the bowl much bigger and gave it a really natural look. Next I made the carb. I got one of the smallest drill bits I had and measured a spot on the top. I know that a carb on the top of the pipe isn't the most convenient but it was the straitest line and best shot. This is where I messed up. Drilling without thinking and trying to make sure it was long enough, I drilled straight through the pipe. At first I thought I'd just have a double carb but this would make the pipe incredibly hard to hold so I put a little wood sealer on it to close it up nice. Next I needed to fireproof the bowl, so I got a small piece of napkin and put honey on it and rubbed it around the inside and covered it with ash then cleaned it out. Now, almost done, I sanded all the previous varnish off and burned the outside of the pipe a little bit. Then sanded again. Then burned again. Then sanded again. Then burned again. Then sanded again. Now it was really smooth and looked very cool and natural. Then I got vegetable oil on a napkin (since I had no mineral oil), and rubbed it all over the pipe so it was smoother and shinier. Then I realized how big the stem hole and I didn't want a mouthful of ash so I got this sink faucet bottom and unscrewed it and took the metal mesh thing and shoved it into the bowl and it worked really well for a vent. All in all I think the pipe is beautiful but maybe that's just 'cause I made it . It looks very earthy almost and very cool and the bowl is very large. I'll post some pics from different angles. Nothing fancy but it'll work. I'd like to see some of your homemade (or just cool) pipes though so please posts some pics! I apologize for the quality, it's taken from my phone but you get the idea. From the top: From the front: From and angle: From the spot I healed up ofter drilling all the way through:
I'm gonna try that, but I'm gonna try and put a socket in there for a bowl. I'll post it here if it works out. Thanks for the idea dude
Lol i used to do this before I got a glass bowl/ =D I don't like them cause the wood burns. I went through like 5.
