My New DIY B.O.N.G

I tend to make a lot of homemade pieces. I've made papertowel roll steamrollers, 2 liter waterfalls/gravs, pipes from wood and also from metal plumbing fixtures, glass bottle bongs and even a heat gun vape, though what I made a few days ago is so much better than all of them.

I was blazed and walking through the aisles of my local Big Lots looking for some incense, when I came across a blue vase on the shelf (It was only $2). It seemed to scream "I could be a kickass bong!". So I got it along with some Sandalwood cones and went home trying to think of what to do with it.

Packed a nice bowl of some middy stuff I picked up this week and set out to build my bong. I used a dremel with a diamond bit on it(ceramic is a lot harder than I thought) and slowly went at it for about half an hour or so until I got a small hole through it. Then I had to use a piece of very rough sandpaper rolled into a tube to widen it to the size I needed. I used a cheap Bic pen tube for the downstem, and poked a few small holes into it and left the end piece on it so that it acts as a diffusor(I actually didn't need to seal it as the fit was very tight). Then I was stumped on what to use for the bowl, so I smoked one and went to go find something to make one with. In my closet I found my old trumpet (actually bought it last year but I haven't picked it up in months) and thought that the gold mouthpiece would look fresh to death on my blue bong. As if by the will of the weed gods, the Bic pen fit perfectly into the mouthpiece, all it needed was a little sanding to make it slide off easier. I don't like bongs that have a hole to clear the chamber, so I wanted to make sure it had a slide style carb.

It's actually the best homemade I've ever toked out of, and I've smoked out of a lot. Just felt proud to make something that works so well. He is dubbed Papa Smurf.

 

My mouthpiece (F. Schmidt 5c) fits perfectly on the Bic Round Stic pens. I just took the hollow tube, stuck it in the bong, sanded one end of the tube a bit, and slid the mouthpiece over the pen. It's airtight and it comes off fine with a slight twist.

Nope. It fit a bit too snug to get it on and off, so I sanded it until the pen was the right size. The rough texture on the pen gives it a nice grip, but not too much. I take my hit and just twist slightly while pulling on the bowl and it comes off easy. I'd like to find something instead of a plastic pen tube, but this works fine and is far enough away from the heat that it doesn't fume or melt or anything.

 

I think the mouthpiece would be fine as long as you can find a tube that has the proper fit. I had a few metal tubes, but they didn't create a seal as well as the plastic did. Though you could perhaps get some rubber tape and put that around your tube to help it seal better. The hole in my mouthpiece is small enough that I don't need a screen, but yours might need one if it is proportionally bigger.

 

Screens can be a bit tricky to find. You can sometimes find the screens that go on sink faucets at hardware stores. Any kind of wire mesh or even a small washer could work. Just something that will block the hole in your bowl enough so your herb doesn't fall through but still allows smoke to pass freely. I've even used a piece of a paperclip bent into a spiral with pliers. But the easy way is to pick up a pack of metal pipe screens or a glass jack screen from your local headshop.

Just drop the screen in the bottom of the bowl and loosely pack your ganja on top of it. After a while resin will cake on the screen and keep it stuck in the bowl. Once it gets hard to hit, just poke the screen out and scrape as much as you can get off, and use a brush or dip it in some rubbing alcohol to get the caked rez out of the holes in the screen.

 

Here is a screen I made really quick out of some wire just to give you an idea. And I took some shots so you can see how far the tube goes into the mouthpiece. Hope that helps.

Huh. Mind sharing how yours was set up? I don't get a bad taste from my bong unless I let the water just get horribly nasty. Did you clean your mouthpiece before hand? When you blow into a mouthpiece for a while and don't clean them they can collect moisture and sometimes mold can develop. What is your mouthpiece made of? Mine is brass and I dont notice any obvious bad taste. Though I guess if you are just talking generally, I can see how you would think they do if you're comparing them to glass, I don't see why they would be considerably worse than any other metal bowl.

Sorry it didn't work out for you though. Mine hits killer. The only tastes I really get are herb and sometimes resin if I get a bit lighter happy.

Yeah it's the bombdiggityshiznit. I thought the name Papa Smurf fit it well. Though if you creative stoners find a name even more awesome, that'd be cool too.
