Hey man, homeades are fun, and cheap, and easy to ditch if you need to, but you know what, if you need to hide it, a spoon/sherlock/bowl will do you just fine, and cheap! If you know of any tobacco shops, you can usually find some in there, of course head shops, and LOTS of convienence stores sell them, if you buy one from here, don't be sad if you break it, the glass quality is never good. However you can pickup a spoon from any of these places for around $15. My local shop has like 20 bowls, 20 spoons, all glass just tossed in a bin for people to buy. If you don't need to hide it, or you can hide it loosely I would really recommend a water pipe. I personally prefer staight tubes (easier to hide in tight spots, although I don't need to hide mine). They are better for you and I personally love the feel of a water pipe compared to just a regular spoon.
highlighters are always sketch to me. i remember using a part of a highlighter as a top for a mini grav bong i had for my dorm room, and that shit was disgusting after a while. i suppose it's legit if you make a new one from time to time.
for a stem use a sharpie just pull the ink part out and put little holes in the bottome to make it a diffuser for a bowl use a socket and just a bottle resivoir
