Just recently at the 7-11 around my house they started selling yellow, orange and red anodized aluminum slurpee straws. They make a perfect stem for a homemade bong. Heres a pic. And here's a bottle I plan to make into a bong sometime today. I'll post pics when I'm done with it.

I thought about the whole "smoking out of aluminum" thing before I even bought the straw. Now this is just my way of thinking, if you can prove me wrong, by all means try. Aluminum foil is what most people use in place of a bowl. A. foil is extremely thin; .001" - .003" I believe. I could see how easily a piece of A. foil could melt with the use of a plain bic lighter. The straw I bought is roughly .025" so it is between 7x and 25x thicker than A. foil. In my mind, I cannot see how the straw could melt, especially since the flame from the lighter will only touch the herb for <1 sec, the smoke will be a far cooler temperature than the flame, which according to Flame temperatures is 1977C. Also, aluminum is an excellent heat conductor, so the heat will spread throughout the length of the straw. Again, that is just my way of thinking. If you can prove me wrong, please do.
Aluminum foil is what most children use as a bowl. Why don't you save up a few bucks and buy a glass piece. I don't want you to get the SuperAids
Most bowls are NOT made of allumin, it's not a matter of the thickness but rather several other things like the chemicals it is treated with and the toxins released when heated. P.S That straw also looks painted with something.
It looks painted because the color is a product of the anodization process (I think). Also, aluminum does melt. If it didn't, we wouldn't have aluminum-alloys. Nevertheless, all of you have convinced me not to use aluminum as the stem. Now, heres another question; Would it be acceptable to use a part of the straw as a stem-holder? Something akin to a bistable joint.
Well, I don't smoke crack, nor do I care to start. Ever. Anyway, even if the aluminum does release some harmful chemicals, I don't really care for a few reasons. 1. I honestly don't see myself living past 35 or 40. Now, I'm not suicidal or anything (well, except for when I don't take my meds), but I just cannot see anything for me past that age. 2. I'm not going to use this as my main smoking apparatus. I will only smoke out of this once, maybe twice. I decided to try and make this just to see if I could make anything half-way decent. 3. ummm... I forgot. Oh shit the alzheimer's is getting to me already and I haven't even smoked yet. Also, heres a look at the herb I'll be smoking soon.
Use it... Seriously...AL in the weed community is like BPA in the outdoor/hiking community. It is such a small amount, don't sweat it. Anyone who says not to use it, should check out their deodorant ingredients. You get more AL from deodorant than smoking an AL pipe.
