Making a carb for a homemade bong, questions and ideas.

Discussion in 'DIY and Homemade' started by RandomDeadGuy, Feb 14, 2010.

  1. I originally built my homemade bong with a slide design (link in signature) but it is very loud when it is pulled and it starts making a lot of bubbles so I have been considering adding a carb.

    1. Would this make it quieter?

    2. Would this part here work, its actually a part from a hose nozzle or something similar. The idea is that instead of having to put a finger over it you just flip that switch thing to off and on position. good idea of not?

  2. i like to put carbs on my bongs, makes it easier to clear. just preference, i guess.

plus, it was the way i was taught. i don't really get the advantages of no carb.

  3. the advantages of no carb
    -air is filtered through water
-no accidentally drawing more smoke while clearing
-can hold it wherever you want, don't have to have a specific hand placement
-water can't spill through the carb

and yes it will be quieter, but you'll lose out on all the above

  4. oh, okay. well if you're holding the carb, it filters the smoke through the water....so it just doesn't filter when you're clearing(and not holding carb)....right? haha

  5. yeah it doesn't filter the air youre clearing, which can make the smoke stale surprisingly fast.

also, you miss out on that moment of hearing your breath ripping through the water to clear your piece. shit's just satisfying.

  6. sorry for derailing a bit...
but as for 2, personally i wouldn't like that as much as having an actual carb hole... visualizing it now, it seems like kind of a hassle to flip a switch, as opposed to just putting your finger over a hole.
also, i like to kinda toggle the carb when i'm clearing, so the switch really wouldn't work for me. but it's up to you!

  7. the switch wouldn't work properly. the hole that air flows through has to be a LOT bigger than your downstem. that pinhole in the hose switch wouldn't switch between milk/clear, it'd switch between hitting well, and hitting shitty (but still hitting)

  8. Well, from the above posts, its looks like I will be heading to the hardware store to get a get a larger switch, and most likely using it if I build a second bong.

in Australia pretty much ALL bongs avalible localy have carbs.

if your home-made is plastic the best carb making technique iv found is to smoke a cigarette and burn a hole through with the tip (obviously don't continue smoking the cigarette afterwards; also works best if theres a slight point to your cigarette cherry).

carb hole doesn't need to be huge and can be placed pretty much anywhere on your piece (keep it away from the water obviously, on some of my bottle bongs I have the carb ~1" from the top and it works well... I thought there would be clearing issues with the carb being so high up but not at all!)

happy toking and post pics when your done.

[edit]: iv looked at your design; a few tips (these are to my personal taste) shorten the downstem and diffuse it yourself! (drill some holes in the downstem near the bottom) and put the carb near the top of the bong :) you may need a larger carb hole than I suggested but start with the cigarette hole and work from there (careful too; plastic cracks / stresses easily and you only get one shot at it)
