After trying in vain to make a home made version of the Magic flight launch box, I fooled around in the shop for awhile trying to come up with a basic vaporizer. Not knowing that it had been done a thousand times, I came up with a soldering iron vape made out of a soldering gun and a mason jar. It was janky, but it did the job. Then I started thinking about how to make it a little more low key instead of having a contraption with a jar and all these hoses sticking out of it sitting around. I decided to house it in a small cabinet. Here are some picks of how far that went. I decided the cabinet was still too big ( a jewelry box looks weird with a cord coming out of it) so I retooled it down, got rid of the jar and managed to fit everything (including the cord) into a box that was 4"x4"x12" with no visible cord. I turned a knob on the lathe to match to rest of the wood. Basically it's just a dimmer $4, the guts from a Harbor Freight soldering gun $10, a small sheet of glass (picture frame from thrift store), some tubing, a screen and some wood. To load the screen you just slide the lid back, slide the glass, load it up, and slide the glass back in place and turn it on. The screen is formed so that the tobacco doesn't actually touch the element at all, making for more even heating. I should have included a light, but the transformer hums when its on so its hard not to know. It's still not stealth enough, so I'm sure I'll just end up burning it and just buy a Launch Box, but it was fun to build.
In a word, yes. Quite well in fact. A light in the chamber would aid in seeing the4 vapors emerge, but it's pretty easy to tell what's going on. The heat control is realy easy to dial in.
