My very first purchase when I was doing research before my grow was a nice $30 hygrometer from the hydro store. Simply because the guy working there answered a lot of my newbie questions and I didn't want to walk out empty handed. Plus I knew I needed one anyway. Based my whole grow using that. Getting closer to harvest I ordered a dozen mini hygro's from amazon. Cheapest they had, $21. Came with batteries uninstalled, not a single one worked. Ok, you get what you pay for, silly me. Ordered another dozen, this time going by highest rated, 4.5 stars, $30. Came with batteries installed, all worked, and all were within 2% rh of each other. Kewlios. Tried the batteries from the new ones in the first batch that didn't work, and hey, they all work too. Sort of. This is what I am looking at. Not worried about temps, they all read +/- the same. The $30 Hygrometer that I used all during my grow shows 64% rh sitting right here next to me. The cheapest mini's range from 55% to 64% almost all below 59, only 1 matching the 64% of my "Good" one. The more expensive mini's all still read within 2% of each other, but all at 55-57% rh. So I am wondering if there is even any point in using any of the mini's at all. By the way I do have another big(cell phone size) hygrometer that's in my drying room at the moment, but it has always matched the first $30 one I bought. So I trust those two they verify each other and sort of don't trust any of the mini's at all. I do have boveda's both 58 and 62, but don't plan on using them until after the cure is over. I've read different stuff on whether they change/absorb flavor. I don't really have a specific question, just wondering what some of your experiences are using mini hygros. I've seen them placed into the lids of mason jars, and would possibly do that, looks like a nice little project. But don't want to waste time if they aren't dependable.
Out on the Washer / Dryer during the day. Stacked in a closed new unused trashcan over night. I do this with gradually less time exposed every day for 7 days. At the end of the week the harvest is dried to the correct 65% for curing. It'll get packed into Half gallon ball jars with a 60 gram size, 62% humidity pack for a 60 day cure. I put the pair of these in the trash can on top of the weed stack and it'll show in the morning what the stack has settled to overnight. No need for more then just a pair of gauges. How I get it done in hot dry southern California. BNW
Paper shopping bags disappeared here awhile back. For a bit you had an option which type paper or plastic. Not anymore, all plastic everywhere. Even the liquor stores around here use plastic bags.
I get consistent readings with the lid hygrometers and calibrate before each cure using the salt method. 62 Bovedas being used.
