It takes a pretty steady flame to light a sturdy piece of wood on fire. If anything it just chars in inside of the bowl but wiull eventually get covered with resin, making it perfectly safe.
Wood, while being very flamable, isn't very combustible. In other words, it's hard to light, but when it does, it's powerful. A lighter isn't nearly hot enough to catch a wooden pipe on fire.
My friend made one out of purple heart. Its pretty sick, never caught on fire but it does get hot after awhile haha
