Homemade wooden pipe.

Discussion in 'DIY and Homemade' started by HeraldBudsworth, Jul 19, 2010.

  1. Hello, I made this beauty about an hour ago and I have some concerns and questions. I realize it is a little rough, and it isn't even or smooth in all the places, but it is my first wooden pipe that I've made.

My first concern is in the very first picture, see that line thats just cut in there? Well I can blow the slightest amount of air through there. It is sort of difficult to, but it is a problem nonetheless. What can I do to fix this? Do I need to scrap it and make a whole new one? (Dear God I hope not)

Also, what do I need to do about a screen? The best view is the 3rd picture of the collage. What are some ideas that ya'll have?

One last thing, is the bowl too big? You could fit quite a bit of weed in there, should I make it smaller some how? As for lighting the bowl, will the flame fuck with the wood? How can I stop it from burning the wood?

    Thanks a lot.

  2. That line is not good at all. It's pretty long any may cause a problem. Dude, you can get a glass bowl for like, $20. I'd say go for that. Good job with the creativity though.

  3. How will it affect me smoking out of it? The line just barely goes into the pipe part. Is there anyway I can seal it?

Yeah I know, I just like using my hands and made this.

  4. Nice man, I always wanted to but could never finish one. I used to just drill a couple holes in a branch. only smoked outta that once though.

  5. uh what wood are you using?

  6. Well about the slit down the side you could probably fill it in with some type of glue like guerrilla glue, I am guessing it shouldn't be too much of a problem. As for getting a screen in that it might be difficult maybe you would just have to stuff a larger nug in the whole and fill it pretty good. Possibly the glass screens you can buy could just sit in the hole also but would be a pain after the bowl is cashed. It's your bowl so it's your call on if its too big. I tried making a homemade one hitter out of wood also but I had the same problems with the wood burning. I'm not sure how to solve this problem either. Hope some of this helps, it is a fun making your own piece.

  7. Just some wood in my garage. I sanded it down quite a bit if there was any treatment on it. Other than that I don't know. Haha.

I might get some. I'll figure something out about the screen. I can't seem to get the screens out of my faucets though, but even those seem too small. It was a lot of fun making this, everyone needs to try it if they have the resources.

  8. I make wooden pipes all the time and I've found that small holes or cracks like that, if they're small enough, will eventually seal up from the resin. So if it doesn't seem to lessen the strength of your draw on the bowl, I wouldn't worry about it. I usually use small stones as screens, like quartz or something, but a normal pipe screen will work fine. To stop the wood from burning, I carbonize the bowl with a torch, but a guy on here recommended mixing some honey in water and painting the bowl with it. Apparently it stops the burning, but I haven't tried it yet.

But anyway, it's cool to see someone else who likes to make pipes. Keep it up bro, good luck to you.

  9. then i wouldnt use it some woods like that are dangerous to use even without any treatment

I used this to fix a crack in my bubbler and it worked fine.
I guess you could use any other surf or skateboard wax either.

  11. Hmm. I'll look into painting it with something like that, how well do stones work for you? Do you have any pictures of your pipes?

What would be some signs that it was dangerous? I don't want to smoke out of something sketchy.

  12. if it was from a 2x4 or something
if it came from a hardware store
    if its pine
thats just a few i dont know the whole list off the top of my head

  13. Ah. Could you link me to a list? or is this just stuff you know?

Is there anyway to visibly tell if it is bad?

  14. wood that is used for houses and shit...dont use it.

    use exotic woods.

  15. Ok... but why?

  16. Yeah dude, this is the only one I have a photo of. I just found a little chunk of quartz that fit in there snugly. It's pretty black and nasty looking by now, haha. It looks like it has a really tight seal, but there's almost no resistance on the draw at all.

And pine won't hurt you any more than any other burning wood, unless it's been treated with chemicals or some shit. But I do agree some kind of exotic wood or hardwood would be way better. You can get some pretty nice pieces of maple at the hardware store, sometimes with flame and curl in them. Red oak is easy to find too, but I find maple is easier to carve and prettier.

  17. That is really nice. It is a lot more earthy looking than mine. I'll head out to Lows or Home Depot and find some better wood, then give it another shot making another pipe. :)

woods like pine have alot of sap and they can release vapors that arent that great for your lungs
    try ebony or olive wood
EDIT: maple cherry white ash plum and briar are also ok

  19. Ok. Cool. Thanks for the advice. :D

  20. Ok, so I found out that the pipe has not been treated. The only problem I have now is drying it out more, making the bowl fireproof (not the wood, just something that will be fireproof), a screen, and the crack.

I found this in my garage and was wondering if it is suitable? It looks as if it is copper, so I don't know if that is safe, but I did hold my lighter up to it for awhile, and nothing came off of it smoke-wise. Can anyone tell me what it is and if it is ok to use?

I have a feeling the crack won't be a problem, and I've figured out my screen problem. What can I do about drying it out more? It wasn't kiln fired, but I've had the wood for an extremely long time.
