okay. so i am making a gift for a friend, and it is going to be spectacular. but for the stem i have test tubes from a while back that remain unused, and i thought of a great way to put them to use. if i can just get the bottom half-sphere off, then i can make it into a stem, without using any possibly harmful plastics. after spending time on google and shattering 3 tubes, i have come for specific advice. these are not 4 foot tubes, so doing the score-and-snap trick wont work. they are pyrex so the string and gasoline/alcohol trick wont work either. I dont have a glass cutter, and im not going to go buy one. how can i go about doing this? I once had a mini tube that i used a torch lighter and quenched a circle around the bottom repeatedly until it popped off. but i want to know if i can improve on that method, im not so sure it will work again. Thanks in advance!
Dnno if it actually works but there is some vid on youtube when he uses string n fire to cut the glass bottle in half. He ties string around bottle, poors acetone or something on it, lights it for a bit, and breaks it in cold water.
The only other way i see you could do this without a glass cutter, is using a big enough diamond-glass cutting drill bit
find someone who has a torch get that shit nice n blue and stick the end in the fire and poke holes with a toothpic to make a diffuser instead of a downstem. May take a lil but he may appreciate it more
i took my torch lighter and quenched a circle around the bottom a few times and it came off. its uneven, but its good. i wish i had a real torch and i would make a diffuser, but i cant.. maybe i could try that next time if i can get ahold of one. thanks for the advice. btw the string and fire, i already mentioned doesnt work on pyrex
