I imagine the plastic in those straws releases a ton of toxic fumes from the hot smoke though... very thin, low grade plastic like that definitely is not safe.
I would agree with you, as well, so watch out! ...But, I assume that only using this method, once or twice, couldn't do too much harm to your lungs/health in general.
