Here are a few photos of my freshly fired ceramic piece that I made in class. Sorry for the shitty quality, I don't have a working camera so these were taken on my webcam. I'll try to get my girlfriend(she's a photographer) to take some better pic's when it's finished. As you may be able to tell, I still need to glaze it, and drill a hole.. but most of the hard work is already done. It's a 9 1/4" tall and 5" wide coil pot, and has a icecatcher, I'm also going to look for a percolated downstem or make one myself, I haven't decided yet. I'm still looking for a nice bowl to fit it, I'm thinking something white/black. I'll also possibly be painting it at a later time, I have a few ideas, possibly a panda theme. idk. thanks for any feedback.
i'd love to see it but the picture isn't showing? am i the only one having this problem? EDIT: never mind i got it now. took 5 refreshes though ahaha. looks pretty legit dude, but you should have made the hole before firing so that it doesnt crack. i don't know much about working with ceramics though, but drilling a hole in something always seems a bit iffy to me you know?
yeah, i would of loved to do that, but the guidelines for my project were pretty specific, and the grade comes first :\ I'm thinking it should be fine if I drill carefully, it's not like it's glass or anything.
hahah well grades matter more than blazing, but still i'm excited to see how it turns out for you. be verrryyy careful nonetheless as i'm sure you will be
If you wanna play it safe, you can use a drillbit thats for drilling glass. It's looking good, make sure you upload pics after you drill it.
ohh, i might be drilling it before glazing, it all depends on where I can get it glazed at.. I have basically 3 options: 1. try to find a way to re-fire/glaze it myself, such as a trashcan over a fire..ect. (I would drill the hole first, then glaze) 2. find some sort of business with a kiln that will let me use it possibly for a fee..(I might drill first, idk.. it would be kinda sketchy to take it to somewhere like that) 3. ask my old hs art teacher if i can use a kiln (couldn't drill a hole first, although she would def. know what I'm making) I'm thinking no.2 might be my best bet, but I'm going to ask around to see what I should do before making any decisions.
Man, looking at that last picture with your face covered I thought you were getting ready to execute that thing.
I'm a potter and know my ceramics, definitely drill it before glazing, it will be difficult enough to do now, but practically impossible after it's been glaze-fired. It wouldn't just be harder because there would be a coat of glaze, but because the glaze-firing is actually a much hotter firing than the one your piece has been through so far, and although the pot is hard now, it will be further strengthened by the second firing.
I'd go with a actual cermaic drill bit, I have a bunch and they're not even expensive, i use them to drill holes in my glass homemades and they work pretty well. You could probably get them anywhere like Wal-Mart or some sort of a hardware store.
