Homemade Carbon Filter.. has anyone else tried this?

Discussion in 'DIY and Homemade' started by bobthebuilder, Mar 30, 2009.

  1. I saw the Roor carbon filter and it looks like a great addition to a bong... but for $30??

I immediately made the realization that they are just selling you a way to keep the carbon from falling further down the stem. First i thought of putting a magnet on the inside and outside of the downstem, and using that to support the activated carbon

Then the other day i was walking around Petsmart and saw some Activated carbon Pads for $5. So i bought them and figured i would give them a try. I simply cut 1 pad in half, rolled a half pad into a rod shape, and jammed it down the downstem

I tried smoking some pipe tobacco, and I am pretty damn sure it works

Just need some green and 2 weeks to see how dirty my bong gets now

  2. be careful of the other stuff in those pads......

  3. exactly. its a clever idea and saves money but there is nothing like the original. Its so much easier to just save a little bit more money and get the real thing. That way you don't have to worry about anything else.

Good point, but now im just going to just put the regular activated charcoal in my downstem, and use a screen to support it.

And also, with the foam pad, the smoke was amazingly smooth. Best bong hit i've ever taken. It also takes a decent amount of heat to melt/burn the pad, I don't think it gets nearly hot enough in the downstem to cause concern

  5. Probably not but your safer just using the screen

    are you fucking kidding me?!

you have to thoroughly rinse activated carbon before you use it in
any application; any aquarium aficionado i've spoken to uses
these over pad-filters for many reasons, one being the chemicals,
two being the carbon dust (more rinsing, takes longer than stones).

be prepared for a very irritated sinus tomorrow morning

edit: if you want to find a cheap way to see if it's worth the investment,
take a gong downstem that ISNT flush with the joint, and shove a piece
of rolled up card down there (like what you would use in a roach, only
you want it to have many coils), then pour some PROPERLY RINSED
carbon stones (about half an inch), and enjoy
(they're cheap- 6.99 for a tub that will last you a long time).

the reason why this method isnt the most practical is because you want
to (ideally) change the stones for about every gram you run through,
maybe every 4 bowls if you're lazy. otherwise, it starts to taste awful.

try not to snap the bowl onto the carbon, those fumes are harmful- just
    hit it gently and pull

  7. uh oh....I never rinsed my carbon when I had my roor carbon filter over the summer...but I also had no irratated sinus...any thoughts?

  8. Yeah it does say to rinse the pads it first.. I dont think they have any other chemicals on them besides the carbon. The advice they give leads me to believe that aquarium-beneficial bacteria grows on them once they are in an aquarium

hell i dont really know...I've never had an aquarium but yeah my sinuses are fine and i got the highest i've ever been off cheap weed, just because I was able to take back to back massive bong rips

But I am definitely going to use regular properly rinsed AC and a screen just to be safe

  9. good idea, ill either use the card method as a jack or maby something that blocks up the down stem a bit less like a metal screen or somethin..

  10. Exactly. Just throw a glass screen in the downstem and pour some in there, works like a charm :)

  11. Yeah I'm going to the pet store today and getting some AC to experiment with

I also came across a few random forum posts about people reusing activated charcoal by boiling it.. I'm curious as to how well that works.. the stuff is so cheap that it doesnt really matter, $6 worth will go a long way
