  1. if you were to do wood yes you would have to use certain types

  2. Ohh now i get it.....STONEerss.

  3. Unfortunately, it doesn't get too much smoother visually but it's as smooth as it'll get. The only other change I made since the original pictures was making the shape of the bowl a bit cleaner, so nothing too significant. However if I change the shape of it into something more....shapely I'll post up pics!
That's cool that you stumbled across this. If your thinking about giving it a shot, I say go for it and am here to answer any questions you may have to the best of my ability:wave:

I wish I had/knew someone with a rock tumbler! It'd be so smooth and shiny! I don't see why it'd be harmful and would totally give it a shot if I could.

Maybe I should make that this summer's (stoner) community service project :D

That's a good question. I don't know much about the kind of wood you would use to make a wooden pipe so unfortunately I can't help you there :/
However I certainly encourage you to try making one out of stone! It's not all that difficult if you're doing a quick DIY job like I did, and I rather like a stone piece. They stay relatively cold in my opinion :)
Glad I could inspire you to give it a shot!

    Thinkin' about it ;)
If I get around to actually doing it you'll know about it!

Yeah I picked up some screens and it works perfectly. I'm stoked on it!:D

    Hehe +rep for puns 'cause I'm a loser :p

  4. thats cool as fuck!

if you got caught with it nobody would thinks its a pipe, and if they find out and trash it, its a rock not a big loss!

  5. Try putting that in the freezer over night and smoke out of it in the morning, should be really cool. Literally! And that's a sick piece, dude!

  6. Advice for stone makers: If you do a lot of drilling or sanding, or chipping using tools or drill bit machines, use either a mask or respirator depending on the stone. If its soapstone, you must wear this, as the particulates are too fine and cause lung issues later, or disease. Also, get a good collection of both Dry and Wet sandpaper. the higher the number the more "bumps" per sq/inch there is, thus a smoother piece. Go from the most coarse dry sandpaper all the way down to the finest. then switch to wet sandpaper on the lowest number (coarsest), and then go all the way to the highest number. This will make it really shiny and smooth as well. Put on some stone wax or whatnot and your golden.

Some stones are good to work with soapstone being the better kind. If you got your from the beach, make sure its not limestone or shale, as those break easily and can have negative effects on your projects. Have fun, and contact me if you need any help. I'm currently making my own stone pieces and will hopefully have some of them done in the next week or so to show all you guys.

(worked with stone for a few years in highschool and college), part of art class (and AP art) and my own hobby.

  7. bd hows it goin!! got any more pics? =)

  8. I'm new to this, and I haven't yet come across a basic list of materials that are safe and non-toxic for use. Any help?

    -Fired ceramic; glazed? (no pun)
    -Sea shells?
-Bamboo (I have read to coat the inside with wax, but what kind?)
    -Terra Cotta?
    -Natural clays/adobe?
    -Quartz and other minerals?
-Brass fittings from a hardware store (if not coated or galvanized?)
-Leather (strips, wet, wrapped around a joint (no pun), shrink to fit if in an area not exposed to heat?
-Coral? I have read that coral was safe to use, but you had said you had trouble with limestone (both calcium carbonate). Was it unsafe or just difficult to work with?
    -A Non-toxic resin/epoxy that will withstand heat?

    Thanks, All!!

  9. Wow, thats actually pretty cool.. It def looks like it needs a screen. to me, it looks like it scooby snacks like a mother. Don't the bowls snap straight into your mouth...? Yuck.

  10. the limestone was hard to work with ,b/c it likes to give way when your drilling into it, or making holes and the like. Its a fickle type of stone, unless you can get a good dense one, then id say try it out. I would never smoke an epoxy/resin type, b/c even if its non toxic normally, it might be toxic in fume form or when heated. I would personally stick to soapstone and other types. Go to a local rock/stone store and ask them if you were to turn it into a pipe (tobacco pipe) like sherlock holmes style, what tpye would be good.. they; might tell you soapstone, meerschaum, clay, or even corncob. I've never used corncob or meerschaum. But clay i have made in the past, (when i had a kiln to use).

There is a type of clay that can be baked in the oven and it will be done, no need for a kiln. I believe its called sculpty or soemthing like that.. Look it up and find out if it can be used for smoking. still... i prefer stone to make, its relaxing.

  11. The only downside is if you get caught with that, you can't just smash it. I guess you could hit the cop over the head with it and run away though.

  12. Haha thanks man!
Right?! Most stress free piece I've ever owned:smoke:

That's a genius idea! I can't believe I haven't thought to try that yet! I'm going to have to now since the stone should definitely stay chilly and that'd be sick!
    And thanks man!

Thank you for the tips! If I have the time to pursue this further I will definitely hit you up with any questions before I proceed! I would love to see some of the stuff you are working on! Make sure to link me up or post up when you've got some stuff to display!

Long time no talk! I've been doing well thank you! I just became SO busy out of nowhere this summer and have not had time to pursue this any more than I have. I'm thinking about taking the one pipe that I've made and trying to add a little bit more of a distinct shape to it. If that turns out well I will certainly post up a picture! I've got to hit you up in a pm to hear how you've been doing. Also we should talk about possibly seeing some paint on this pipe or the next one. I figure even if I can't put out a dozen of these I would absolutely love to see what you can do with just one and would love to send one out your way asap! Let's talk!

Thanks man I'm glad you like it!
No doubt it needs a screen though. Interestingly enough I haven't had any trouble with it without the screen though. With a relatively fat plug nug and a little extra care it actually works just fine.....but god would a screen be helpful :p

Hahaha I just imagined being caught with it and throwing it at the ground as hard as I could in an attempt to smash it, only to be in complete shock and devastation when I see it's still there in one piece, good as new, staring right back at me and the cop who caught me.....until I hit him over the head with it and run away.

  13. ive done this. only i use wood. i found out awhile ago that birch is safe, and started useing it to make spoons. im working on another one right now. ill post a pic once im done with it, this one is taking awhile...

  14. Wow, that's awesome! Can you do this with any stone?

  15. That's so sick! I'd love to see some of your work! Make sure to post up or link me as soon as you're ready to put some pictures up! I'd love to try my hand at a wooden spoon if I ever come across the right materials! I'll hit you up for pointers if I get the chance!

    Thanks man!!
The way that I did it? Probably not.
Equipped with the proper knowledge, tools, and experience of someone who works with stone? I'm sure any stone would work.
The stone that I happened to pick up was easy enough to work with that I could drill right into it with the drill and twist bits I just found in my garage. No special equipment was needed. However I think that if I were to use a harder stone it would have been much more difficult if not required a special set of tools entirely.

hey, i made my own one out of wood. this one took forever... but i think its alright. it works pretty good. on one side is a carb, on the other i bent an herb leaf out of wire and heated it up until it would leave a burn in the side. and the bowl came out shaped weird.. but it works! here you go!

  17. Thats awesome as shit man!!!

  18. That's sick dude!! I really love what you did with the wire! I never would have thought to do something like that. It makes for such a sick little stamp/emblem/signature or whatever you want to consider it! That's awesome that it works man. Nothing quite like smoking from something you made yourself. By the way do you notice a difference in taste when smoking out of wood? You should keep at it until you make one that's perfect. That would be so sick. You should start like a wood pipes progression thread or at least a thread to post up some of your creations! Thanks for remembering to come back and share with me!

Haha thanks I'm glad you like it! :)

it does taste different, it adds like a chocolate/popcorn/caramel flavor to it. and it deffinately makes the smoke smoother too, the smoke from the wood mixes with the smoke from the bud, and its so good! you just have to be careful what wood you use. like you can't use cherry, my friend said the bark contains cyanide... i don't know if its true or not but i wouldn't take chances! you don't wanna be smoking cherry!
