All i need help with is the pipe + bowl part. See, i was thinking I'd pick up a length of glass tubing (it's a glass bong) to use as the pipe before the bowl but i have no idea what to do as the bowl, or use. do i need to attach anything or use the end of the tube? Do i use a screen? if so, how? should it be glass? how would i attach it? I really would like a screen of some sort as i used to swim and my lungs are pretty beastly so i always end up sucking the shit up. Also, i would it be better to make a separate carb to cover with my thumb when filling or make the pipe removable and use it like that? One last thing, could someone tell me some rough ratios for how far up the bong i want the hole(s) to be? Like, 1/3 up etc.. Thanks in advance, this has really got me stumped.
Well, nothings actually been made yet.. ahaaa. It's going to made from a beer bottle (i have been advised against this but i personally think that it will be the perfect size as it will need to be hidden and i will most probably be using it for a few hits at a time, i also really like the green colour. And i use just ice so the volume wont be much of an issue) I don't know if that helps in anyway.. oh, and please don't try to discourage the beer bottle.. I'm bored of normal bongs and if it doesn't turn out great for whatever reason i will simple change the bottle and keep the stem and bowl. Thanks.
Well, as i have no shortage of beer bottles i was gonna try the various myths about making a hole in glass before i used a diamond tipped drill bit. I'm gonna try scratching a circle then using a quick hammer tap, and also scratching a circle then heating it up and colling it down quickly. Like i said, if all else fails, good old drill bits.
Good idea on the beer bottles. Practice first. As for your initial question, This answer was made over the years from personal exp... Buy a female piece and a bowl from a head shop. Unless you have tons of machines and experience, there is no way to make anything comparable to the real thing. And it is just SOOOOO much better to smoke a piece that isn't all jury rigged with tape and glue and all that "home made" stuff. Trust me, just by the femal piece and bowl.
Yeah, i really didn't want the whole falling apart home-made look, thats why i asked for help before i dived in. That stuff is fine on the go, but i want something solid that i can always rely on. And thanks, i think i will get it from a headshop, only problem is that here in england we don't really have them, i tried looking on grasscity but the only thing i can find are 14 inch downpipes which i think would be too big for a beer bottle. Any advice? Thanks.
The 14 isn't referring to the length of the downstem. It is talking about the "joint size" of the down stem. And it's in Millimeters. However, I Don't know why none of the downstems listed on this side have the total length on them.
Wouldnt the mouth part on a beer bottle be to small to put your mouth into? youd have to kinda make out with it and itd be hard to pass around but wherever your buying the glass tube, look for a glass funnel : use that for a bowl ^ You chances are it wont slide in and be airtight, so you should get an o ring, oor a rubber grommet, or even wrap the outside of the bowl piece (not the bowl part, the stem that fits into the downstem) with electrical tape so that when it fits its snug You wont need a screen but if you get one, get a glass one what would you prefer doing? sliding the bowl..or the carb? id say experiment without a carb and if you like it, keep it that way. this way when you clean the bong, you wont have to worry about an extra hole it will be simpler to cover a hole with your finger and shake. for where to put the whole, you should take the bottle and puit your glass stem infront of the bottle at an angle, see where the ends of the stem will be, you dont want the part in the water jammed against the glass, and you dont want the end where the slide goes to be infront of your face. I think your gonna need a diamond drill bit though, you have to drill at an angle so the stem will sit at a diagnol angle, or else it will go horizontal and slide out in no time
Yeah, the angle is what i'm worried about.. i think i'm gonna have to find another main part, i'm thinking something with a spherical base so i can mount a stand at an angle and then have thee downpipe almost vertical, meaning i wouldn't have to drill at an angle. Like, a HUGE light bulb... hmmm.
no no no. you got it all wrong. dont use a beer bottle, go out to walgreens and buy a 2 doller aquaglobe thing thats for watering your plants. I used a diamond tipped bit and it worked first time perfectly. just be patient and use some wd-40. now the aquaglobe is a little thin so it will be a fragile bong. the first one I made I stepped on in a backpack on the floor while high. bahaha. but for the downstem mine was a slider that I made from using a test tube about half inch across I found around the house, and drilling little holes in it with the tip of the bit so it was diffused. i put a screen in that baby and she worked like a dream untill I stepped on it haha. but you have to be precise in your drill size to your downstem if your trying to make it a glass on glass slider. otherwise it will leak. so if your not good at precision just make a carb. hope this helps! CP P.s. dont forget to wash it out after your all done so you dont get wd-40 and glass shavings in your lungs p.p.s. try not to use any other materials other then glass. DO NOT use like silicone gasket maker for a good seal because it is very toxic to inhale. I did it once and the first second of the hit had me coughing and puking all over. maybe aquarium silicone but still that will add a bad flavor to the hit. try and make it all glass.
yeah, i'm gonna head down to b&q tommorow (I have no idea if you have them in america... its like a big DIY store with pretty much anything for sale) and look at glass vases and stuff and see if i can get a cheap one with those bulb shaped bottoms and a long neck. I found something to use as the downpipe and bowl... its not glass but qualty metal. I'll upload a picture in a min. Once i've cleaned it i'll put a screen in the top and smoke something from it, if i dont get a bad taste i'll use it. Thanks.
Even better, i found this under my bed! It's a beast without the wooden bits it has a stand at the bottom. Also, its HUGE! Well, for its size... 1.5L nice long neck as well. Its perfect.
