Hand made wooden pipe

Discussion in 'DIY and Homemade' started by Mr DudeMan, Aug 26, 2011.

  1. Been lurking for a while and toking for a while longer, but this is my first new post.

I usually just toke out of a bong and smoke joints and never really bothered to get a pipe, so I've decided to take a walk in the woods and find a good piece of wood to carve into one.

My question is does anyone have experience doing this? Is there any dangers I should be aware of besides cutting myself? What should I use to make a hole through it? Is there any treatment or curing or glazing i should do to the wood before smoking out of it? How badly/quickly do they degrade?

    Thank you for any responses.

  2. whats wrong with your bong??? if u really want a pipe then just go buy a 10 dollar one....
unless ur a wood carver and know how to do that shit safetly....

One of the main points is I enjoy the process and the time it will take to make this pipe and the natural element. I'm trying to find something to do today, if I buy a spoon online I'll be just as bored as i already am :)

  4. That sounds pretty cool, I'm curious to see the answer. Bet a smooth pipe you carved yourself feels great in your hand.

Like I said I just want something to keep me busy, ive made a pretty nice catapult recently and kept me entertained and had the end of product satisfaction, inb4 denice the menace.

  6. be careful alot of woods release toxins when charred, so you could be poisoning yourself every time you smoke

Don't take dead wood you found in some muddy forest, I would advise to go to home depot or something and get a proper clean piece of wood.

Cut the outside shape of the pipe with a knife. This will keep you busy for a while... Then with different size drill bits you do the bowl and the rest. I do think that it would be better if you make it in a way that you can screw a metal bowl on top of it would be quite nice.

Then you can let it dry... Something you can do is close off one of the holes and blow with everything you got into the pipe forcing moist to be pushed out of the pores of the wood. You decide when you think its dry enough to smoke out of.

What you need to coat the wood to protect it against the flame and heat is something I am not sure of...

  9. Blowing through it is an incredibly inefficient way of drying it out.... best way would be to toss that bitch in the oven...maybe like or so degrees for about twenty minutes. It'll be bone dry, which is what you want.

  10. I'm pretty sure you need a special kind of durable wood for carving a pipe... Not just any old wood

They're nice though, my Dad has a wooden pipe hand carved from 1985 and still uses it to this day.. Let me know if you want to see it I'll definitely post a photo

  11. I never said that with the power of your own lungs it will get perfectly dry (or at least I didn't mean to give that impression) but more as a measurement to see how much water is it holding.

I don't know if my local woods has bamboo..

  13. Not op, but I'd love to see a picture :smoke: !

  14. Me and my friend went down the woods and found the piece of wood we are going to use it's about 2inch diameter and pretty hard and dense also when I held a lighter to it it didn't char or release smoke. I don't know what type it is I found it on the floor but It is pretty fresh cleaned it and stripped the bark to let it dry out. Will try keep updated.

  15. i like how u just totally disregarded the warnings about NOT just getting any random piece of wood and that some are POISONOUS!
