Hi guys, ive been smoking out of homemade gravity bongs for years now and im starting to worry that i could be inhaling harmful chemicals when i do so. here is how my gravity bong is put together: Chrome-plated drill bit for the bowl Drill bit is fit into cap of 2-liter and 2 liter is used for bong this is pretty much your standard gravity bong obviously. i have a few concerns though: 1. is it possible at all that when i light the bowl, the metal, chrome-plated drill bit is releasing harmful chemicals? 2. could the plastic cap holding the drill bit get hot enough to release chemicals that are used to make plastic? 3. and finally, could the 2-liter itself start to release chemicals from sitting in the GB water for so long? any insight or direction to a website would be extremely appreciated! i will note that i do not smoke out of my GB all the time. id say its a once a week thing (only when i go into conservative mode with my stash). other than that, i smoke out of glass
I'd say change the bottle after you use it, I personally wouldn't use the same one for years. Maybe I read your post wrong but that's what I think you're saying you do?
Use a glass wine bottle for your gravity, much more durable, nicer, and cleaner. The plastic makes your smoke get stale really quickly
I'd say the bottle gets changed on a monthly basis. I don't drink 2-liters but my roommates sometimes do so whenever they go through one I have them save it so I can replace my dirty one. I've seriously considered making a glass one out of a handle of liquor or something but I've seen it botched before (using the lighter fluid and dunking in ice cold water technique). I do notice my smoke getting stale before its even finished lighting so ill have to find time to do it one day
Depending on how often you use it, I really would change it more often than that, even. Apparently they're not even supposed to be refilled with water after you've emptied them, so I can only imagine smoking through them multiple times can't be good. If you did end up making a glass one you'd be golden, so it's worth doing. But for now I would advise to change it every session or so if you carry on using plastic, just to be on the safe side. Not an expert, but that's just my personal opinion
Hydrocarbons in smoke will eat at the plastic, so clean it out with rubbing alcohol after every sesh and you'll be golden. The chrome is not plated on but the socket is solid chrome vanadium, I don't think its bad for ya as long as it doesn't get any oxidation, metal oxides can be harmful.
