DIY glass repair and flame-polishing

  1. Okay disclaimer first:

    • I have no clue what I'm doing.
    • This was probably a bad, stoned idea.
    • I was willing to break/lose all of these parts.
    • Don't do it.
    • EYE PROTECTION!!
    • Don't do it!

So I had this crown slide that arrived with a broken dot.

I like tinkering with shit so why not try to fix it? Picked up a little Ronson torch at W@lm@rt awhile back so I fired that sucker up.

It ended up with some smudging on the dot, but definitely better than before!

Then I got looking at some of my other glass, and thinking bout something that really peeves me.... jagged, cut edges. Ugggghhhhhh,

I don't get it. It takes like 19 seconds to stick it in a flame and smooth out the edges, making it MUCH prettier and presumably more functional. Even @ $150/hr, that's less than a dollar worth of work. The benefit:effort ratio seems huge, like the easiest way to make shitty glass look a ton more respectable. What am I missing? Is the risk of breaking it really so great? Why is such an easy thing left out?

Well, research be damned. I remembered the small amount of glass work I did in high school chemistry and got all excited about the thought of CHEAP flamed polished glass. So out came a WS stem and into the flame.

Well, it worked! I just went really slow and got the whole area up to temp before putting the edges on the hot part of the flame. K, enough, here's some pics. I did my WS double bub downstem too!!

EHhh one section on the shroom perc got a little too hot, but overall I'm very happy. Even that part that's all fuckered looks much better in real life.

    OCD therapy.

    cheers.

  2. Wow dude, im kinda impressed!

Im not going to be trying it on anything thats not broken, but if its broke, its worth a try!

  3. yeah you can do this, you can also get a regular downstem and make a showerhead diffy out of it with a dremel and torch
