Clay Pipe and acrylic paint

Discussion in 'DIY and Homemade' started by MacGyverGirl, Dec 27, 2012.

  1. Hello everyone

I love making my own pieces, and I've got a great idea.

I have hand dug clay from a local pond, acrylic paints, and clear coat acrylic. If I were to make a pipe, let it dry ect... Paint it, and coat the entire thing inside and out with the acrylic clear cost paint, would it be safe to smoke from?

  2. Crapola, I forgot to tell you.

The inside would be tubing and a metal bowl. NOT coated on the inside with the clear coat. The clay essentially would be moulded around the piping/bowl. Then I would paint ect..

  3. I clear coated the first wood pipe I made. Not in the bowl or stem as you describe. And I will never never do it again. Any heat around acrylic, plastics, paints etc will cause them to release fumes.. Use wax or oil instead for a natural, more safe clear shiny finish.

  4. Thanks! Any wax/oil suggestions?

  5. I use bees wax, parrafin wax, linseed oil and mineral oil for my products. Depends on the surface really. I'd go with bees for clay. How did you temper or harden the clay?

  6. Super slow air dry. I don't have kiln access, and there's 2 feet of snow out so there's no making one. :/

  7. I have paraffin wax, but I wonder if it would melt when exposed to flame when being used?

  8. same rule applies when finishing the bowl, its gotta get a char or good "seasoning" instead of a shiny finish. So, apply like you would laquer. I use my dremel or a buffing wheel and just use it like a polishing compound then rub off excess with a soft rag.

  9. Honey works too, just regular honey from the bottle. It will keep the wood from burning.
