The trait is properly called whorled phyllotaxy! It pops up now and then. The plant will continue to produce 3 leaves and 3 branches per node until it begins to mature. Then the normal alternation of leaves basically erases the trait. You end up with a few "extra" branches, but by harvest, the only way you can tell the difference between a WP plant and a normal one is by looking at the bottom of the plant to see the triple branches. Some folks say that WP plants tend to be males, but I've had WP plants of both sexes over the years and most of them were female. Granny
