Just keep in mind, that like ANY bottle (even those used for merely drinking cold water) these DIY plastic bottle pipes and bongs should only be used for a few weeks, to a few months MAX... that's when they begin releasing chemicals the fastest. These plastics degrade with both light and heat, but normally, they would be completely filled with liquids which reduce both the temperature and light exposure. And even so, they are already breaking down and releasing toxins, even when they are brand new and filled with juice or soda, it's just at a much slower and "FDA approved" pace, but only in the short-term. Now that's just for drinking cold, to room-temp water. You need to consider that you're not just using it for water, you're sending smoke, whether it's hot or cold, containing a variety of chemicals through the plastic as well. They are definitely cool and more artistic than most DIY! But you're much better off with a hot joint and decent hemp papers, than you are using a bong made from plastic that technically shouldn't even be re-used for drinking cold water.
Thank you for posting something intelligent Now what the difference these chemicals make is what I think we should be concerned about, if they are even concentrated enough to effect us as far as inhaling or even drinking them. In my argument, I don't think the smoke passing through alters the plastic in any way, it just adds junk to the water. It needs to be of a certain temperature to melt or alter the chemicals in the plastic. (which the exact temperature of said smoke passing through is uncertain). But when you consider smoking a joint/blunt and how close your mouth and throat is to the ignition source without getting severely burnt (and considering burns on human skin occur much lower than melting point of plastic) it shows that the temperature should be in a safe range to be sent through plastic without harm. You are correct about it being toxic: Acetaldehyde is toxic when applied externally for prolonged periods, an irritant, and a probable carcinogen. It is an air pollutant resulting from combustion, such as automotive exhaust and tobacco smoke. It is also created by thermal degradation of polymers in the plastics processing industry. Acetaldehyde naturally breaks down in the human body but has been shown to excrete in urine of rats. Acetaldehyde is also the most abundant carcinogen in tobacco smoke; it is dissolved into the saliva while smoking. Fermented food and many alcoholic beverages will also contain significant amounts of acetaldehyde. BUT, it is also contained in Marijuana smoke that's going through said plastic (since Acetaldehyde is created from combustion). So the same chemical formed from plastic degradation is also in marijuana smoke. So In my opinion, id be more concerned about Acetaldehyde released from combustion; since the volume of smoke (containing Acetaldehyde) is MUCH greater than that contained in the plastic/water; and just use a vaporizer (which is what I do. lol) I like your ideas I may have to venture into this soon and give it a whirl. The only concern I see is too much drag from the water filtration, but there are ways around that!
Sorry unfortunately I don't think that would be possible haha Depends which ones you're talking about. lol. But the majority of them use the bottom of a small bottle, or the lid to a container, with holes punched through with a metal "poker".

I've been real busy with college and other shit so I havent had much time to work on homemades or anything really lately XD But I havent forgot about this thread and I appreciate everyones feedback! Next time I make one, (which will hopefully be sooner than later) its going to be better than all the rest. So it'll definitely be worth the wait

Yeah I'm sorry I realized that. I epicly fail at time lines at the moment lol. I been real busy lately with new years and also applying for jobs. I actually have something in the works, but don't want to post any pics until its done. But it is pretty promising so far. I just need to get some spare time to design the rest and finish it up. lol But yes good things to come! As far as gravity bongs, I could try and fashion something up. But I would most likely do a waterfall type design as other types might not work as well when attaching percolators and such. lol
