Canadian cannabis company Tantalus Labs, often called the “Tesla of cannabis”, has just finished construction on a brand new, customized greenhouse. This new greenhouse could change the way we grow cannabis for good. One of the biggest criticisms that the cannabis industry faces is the environmental impact of growing the plant. One of the biggest issues is the amount of space that outdoor fields take up. Tantalus’ new greenhouse could change all of that.
Most cannabis is grown indoors simply because cannabis is still illegal on a federal level in both the United States and Canada, though medical cannabis is legal throughout Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said in the past that he planned to legalize cannabis sometime this year, which will no doubt bring billions into the Canadian economy. As such, there will be a lot of pressure for growers to keep up with demand for cannabis. Since some strains require the outdoors, this requires a lot of land use. This greenhouse will allow growers to cultivate strains typically grown outdoors, without having to actually grow them outdoors.
The new greenhouse is also expected to enable plants to mature faster, which will certainly help in keeping up with the growing demand (no pun intended). In addition to letting in natural sunlight, the greenhouse also cycles its air every seven minutes, ensuring the cleanest, freshest air possible.
Engineers at Tantalus spent over two years designing the greenhouse to ensure that it was as environmentally friendly as possible, which is one of the company’s core values.
This new greenhouse will no doubt also save on energy costs, and lessen other environmental impacts associated with growing cannabis.Such a greenhouse would be great for growing hemp to be used as an alternative fuel source, especially since it already leaves a low carbon footprint. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get some new strains out of it too.
