A few months ago we reported that a scientific study conducted by the University of British Columbia (UBC) showed that when given the choice patients prefer pot over pills. Results from a new survey show that pain patients prefer pot overwhelmingly over pills.
This survey was conducted by UC Berkeley in a partnership with Hello MD (an online forum for people who use cannabis medicinally), and consisted of 2,897 patients who were currently using medical cannabis. Of the respondents, 63% reported that they were using cannabis to treat chronic or debilitating pain conditions such as arthritis or fibromyalgia. Of those patients, 30% (841 people) reported using prescription pills in the past six months. Of those people, 92% of patients prefer pot over the pills they had been taking. 93% of patients said that if they had the choice between using cannabis or pills, they would choose cannabis. 71% of respondents said that cannabis worked just as well at treating their pain as cannabis. Lastly, 97% of respondents said that they would use pills less often if the option of using cannabis were available to them.
Of course, this isn’t the most sound scientific survey. Respondents were recruited from a pool of people who already used cannabis, so there is some bias. However, these results are still pretty telling. The US is going through an opiate crisis of epic proportions. A recent report from the UN Drug Office stated that deaths from overdoses tripled from the period of 1999-2015. Last year, overdoses went up by 11%. These survey results show that there needs to be more research into the efficacy of using cannabis as a replacement for prescription pain pills. In the end, it may turn out that all pain patients prefer pot over pills.
The Trump administration, specifically the Justice Department, has said that they are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to solve the opiate crisis here in America. They have been offered a solution. Will they take it?
