How Organic Cannabis Could Change The Way We Grow Food

Cannabis is legal in some form in almost three fourths of the United States. This means that it’s quickly becoming one of the biggest crops in the US. The cannabis industry is set to overtake the manufacturing industry by 2020. As such, the industry may end up having a great deal of influence over other industries, say for example, food.

Allow me to explain. Organic cannabis farming is starting to take off within the industry. This is because there is a lot of interest in growing the finest and most potent product as possible, in the largest quantities possible. John-Paul Maxfield, the founder of the Colorado based company Waste Farmers hopes that the practices of organic cannabis farming will take over the food industry. “We want to disrupt industrial food and agriculture… because if industrial agriculture continues, we’re going to be in tough shape as a species.” Maxfield has said.

Waste Farmers came into being with the legalization of cannabis in Colorado. Maxfield developed an organic soil compound which he called Batch 64, which became very popular with cannabis farmers. Now, Waste Farmers has three different blends which are completely organic and designed to provide bigger crop yields and higher quality crops. As organic cannabis farming becomes more and more popular, hopefully these practices will begin to influence other areas of agribusiness, such as food.

As we begin to see the effects of climate change affect our food supply, it is more important now than ever before that we start using more sustainable farming methods. The industrial agriculture industry in its current form is not only not sustainable, it also produces crappy food that is low in nutritional value and energy dense. If cannabis is legalized throughout the US and other parts of the world, I think that we will see this type of farming really take off.
