Scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson, an undeniably intelligent man thought by some to be the next Carl Sagan, recently came out in favor of legalizing cannabis saying, “there was no reason for it to be illegal in the first place. Tyson was doing a Facebook Live Q & A session with host Chuck Nice. He was responding to a question submitted by Tom Angell of the legalization advocacy group Marijuana Majority. Angell asked whether he agreed with Carl Sagan that cannabis should be legalized. Tyson’s answer was, “If you really analyze it relative to other things that are legal, there’s no reason for it to have ever been made illegal in the system of laws.” He went on to say,“Alcohol is legal and it can mess you up more than smoking a few Js.” The host Nice replied with, “That is extremely rational, which I expect from you, and you’re absolutely right.”
Neil deGrasse Tyson is probably one of the smartest people on the planet, other than Dr. Stephen Hawking. Of course he’s got a rational opinion on cannabis. Tyson’s probably never smoked a day in his life, judging by the vernacular he uses, but that’s neither here nor there. In fact, it’s probably better that Tyson doesn’t indulge becauses it means that he’s objective. Though, if he wants to be like his hero, the great Carl Sagan, he probably should give it a try.
It’s hard to argue with his logic. Most people agree with him, if the recent polls showing a vast majority of the country favors legalization are anything to go by. What’s the rationale in keeping cannabis illegal? The task force that Jeff Sessions put together specifically to find a link between crime and legal cannabis failed to do that. It’s time for the canna-haters to admit that there is no rational reason for keeping cannabis illegal. I’m siding with Neil deGrasse Tyson.
