Everyone who loves a good prank was treated to an awesome sight on Sunday morning: sometime during the night pranksters changed the iconic Hollywood sign so that it now read “Hollyweed.” The prankster, a young male who hasn’t yet been identified, used a set of tarps which he draped over the the two “o”s, changing them to lowercase “e”s.
It is widely believed that this prank was related to the state of California voting to legalize cannabis for recreational use this past November. Prop 64, or the Adult Use of Marijuana Act makes it legal for adults 21 and over to purchase and grow cannabis for personal use, though the actual sales of the product will not begin until 2018.
The sign was fixed shortly after 11 am that morning. Though some are referring to the prank as vandalism, there was no actual damage done to the sign. The person who did it will be looking at a misdemeanor trespassing charge at the most. This is also not the first time that the Hollywood sign has been changed to read “Hollyweed”; the sign was also changed 41 years ago in 1976, when California voted to relax existing cannabis laws.
Images of the sign went viral on Reddit and all over social media. Local news anchors chuckled as they reported the news, saying that 2017 was off to a “blazing” start. Last year was a landmark year for cannabis legalization, with seven states in the US voting to legalize cannabis for either medicinal or recreational use. Starting 2017 with a Hollyweed sign seems like a good omen for the months to come.
