Happy Legalization Day California!

  • Comments

The day that we have all been waiting for has come to pass; it’s legalization day in California. Now any adult over the age of 21 can legally buy weed. So, what’s the mood in the Golden State today? Well, people have been waiting in line since early this morning so they could be a part of California history. It’s safe to say that they’re in high spirits.

Some people, like Johnny Hernandez of Modesto smoked “Happy New Year” blunts with their family and friends. Hernandez told Time Magazine, “This is something we’ve all been waiting for,” he said happily. “It is something that can help so many people and there’s no reason why we should not be sharing that.” Hernandez also indicated that he hopes that legalization in California would “ help alleviate the remaining stigma some still believe surrounds marijuana use.” “People might actually realize weed isn’t bad. It helps a lot of people,” he said

Of course, it’s not all sunshine and roses. LA and San Francisco don’t have legal weed for sale yet, simply because they didn’t finalize their regulations close enough to meet the deadline. Some cities, such as Fresno, have completely banned recreational sales in their city limits.

There’s also the issue of costs. The wildfires that tore through California in October and again in December have destroyed much of the state’s cannabis crops, which will surely cause prices to go up dramatically. Some California residents have said that they will continue to buy cannabis on the black market. That’s certainly not good news, as that type of thing could draw the attention of the Justice Department. California is the largest state with a recreational market (population wise) and it could be a good indicator for how legalization would work in the rest of the country.

California, I wish you the best, and please don’t mess this up.
