Cannabis reform has made it into the Democratic Party’s national platform for the first time ever and to celebrate members of the Philadelphia chapter of NORML (National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws) will be marching from City Hall to the Wells Fargo Center, where the convention will be held. Marching with them will be a joint over 50 feet long.
Of course NORML will not be carrying a real joint. The giant doobie is inflatable, similar to the dancing inflatable men seen at car lots. It has previously been seen at a protest at the White House and in New York City.
The march will start on the 25th, the first day of the convention at around 1 or 2 Monday afternoon. The joint will then be marched back to City Hall at the convention’s conclusion on the 28th.
Activist Nikki Poe had this to say, “Times are changing. Things are getting different. Marijuana can unite this country. We’re the new America. We want to be heard, with a message of peace, compassion and care for people.”
One of the organizers, Chris Goldstein of NORML says that the joint is not a protest, but rather a celebration of the progress made toward marijuana reform in the US.
“Removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act was, three years ago, a very radical position. Now, Bernie Sanders has a bill in the Senate about it, and the party is seriously considering it. We’ve had decriminalization here since then,” Goldstein said.
Four years ago it was unthinkable to even mention nationwide decriminalization in the US. Now, it’s part of the national platform of one of the major parties. The times they are a-changin indeed.
