Could CBD Treat Your Anxiety? A New Study Aims to Find Out

  • Comments

Now that cannabis legalization appears to be here to stay, there is a growing interest surrounding cannabidiol, aka CBD, the non psychoactive counterpart to THC. A new study seeks to find out whether or not CBD would be effective in treating anxiety, as well as chronic aches and pains. As someone who takes CBD to relieve my anxiety, I can tell you that it does help, and it helps a lot.

CBD is more popular than ever before. Dispensary purchases of high CBD low THC cannabis and cannabis products have gone way up in the past couple years. New Frontier Data predicts  that CBD sales will come close to quadrupling over the next four years. Currently CBD sales are at 200 million and are expected to reach 1.9 billion by 2022.

With the rising popularity of CBD, there is a rush to discover all of the things that CBD is capable of. One of the things researchers will be focusing on is whether CBD can be used to treat anxiety and addiction. “I think there’s good evidence to suggest that CBD could be an effective treatment of anxiety and addiction” and other disorders, says Dr. Esther Blessing, a psychiatrist and researcher at NYU. With funding from the National Institutes of Health, Blessing plans to run clinical trials to determine whether or not this is the case.

Blessing’s study will consist of 50 participants who suffer from PTSD along with alcohol dependency. Participants will be administered 400mg of CBD or a placebo each day. The goal is to see if CBD helps curb the desire to drink. Of course it will be a couple years before we know the results from this clinical trial, but I would imagine that the results will be quite promising.
