Founder of the extreme right wing news site Infowars and everyone’s favorite conspiracy theorist, Alex Jones is back in the news after a rather puzzling testimony in his highly publicized child custody case. If you are unfamiliar with Alex Jones, all you really need to know is that he is a darling of the fascist leaning “alt-right” movement. He once claimed that President Obama was “a literal demon.” He is also responsible for pushing the narrative that the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting was staged, he also happens to be a huge Trump supporter. You get the idea.
Alex Jones recently testified in court at a child custody hearing. He admitted to smoking pot, which is legal in California. Smoking cannabis also does not make you unfit to be a parent. I would rather have stoner parents than violent alcoholics. What was funny was the reasoning that he gave for indulging in cannabis. He claims that he uses cannabis once a year “to monitor its strength, which is how law enforcement does it.” He then went on to say that George Soros, the billionaire was responsible for making cannabis way too potent in order to give people brain damage.
There’s a lot to unpack there. First of all, the cops don’t get together yearly to smoke weed, and if they do, it’s not to test its potency. As you all know, there are many ways to test the potency of cannabis besides smoking it. Secondly, even if this were the way that law enforcement tested cannabis, then why does he assume that he has the right to do what law enforcement does? Last time I checked Infowars is not a law enforcement agency (thank god). Also, that bit about George Soros? The man is heavily involved in both the public and private sector, but one thing I am sure of is that he’s not growing cannabis. He’s almost 100 years old, for one thing. Also, cannabis is too potent? Ha! It sounds like Alex Jones just has too low of a tolerance to me. He’s a batshit crazy conspiracy nut who can’t handle his grass.
The rest of his testimony is pretty hilarious. You can read a rundown of it here.
