When it comes to cannabis, there is a lot of misinformation out there, partly because a lot of information available to stoners about cannabis is purely anecdotal. Even though we live in the age of the internet, some myths about cannabis and stoner life in general still remain. Here, we look at some of the most common stoner myths.
Does Cannabis “Go Bad?”
A couple weeks ago I was doing some badly needed cleaning, and I came across some cannabis that I had taken on a road trip a year ago. Naturally, I smoked it and it was fine. Contrary to popular belief, cannabis will not go bad, as long as it has been dried and stored properly. The only way that cannabis can actually go bad is if it grows mold, but that typically happens before it has been dried. If you keep your cannabis too moist, then it can develop mold, in which case you should not try to smoke it. As far as cannabis going bad from sitting around for months, this is a myth.
Will Drinking My Bong Water Get Me High?
Once when I was hanging out with a friend after smoking a couple bong bowls, I watched in horror as he took a giant gulp of bong water. He then offered me some, which I refused. He told me that drinking bong water would get me higher. He then ran into the bathroom to puke. THC is not water soluble, so drinking bong water will not get you high. All that is in your bong water is ash and all the carcinogens that the water is supposed to filter out. Why would you want to drink that? You should never drink bong water, even on a dare.
Does Cannabis Get Better With Age?
Some things, like alcohol and beautiful women, get better with age. This is not the case with cannabis. As cannabis ages THC begins to break down with exposure to light and air. This is why keeping your stash in a bag dries it out. You should store your cannabis in an airtight container like a glass jar, away from light. Smoking old cannabis will still get you high, but not as high as it would have when it was fresh. It will also taste stale as shit.
Does Holding My Hit In Longer Get Me Higher?
When you first started using cannabis, you were surely told that the longer you hold your hit in, the higher you would get. It makes sense, right? As it turns out this is a myth. Holding your hit in longer will not get you high. According to a study conducted in 1989 by the National Institutes of Health the length of time you hold your hit in does not make a difference. Study participants were asked to hold in their hits for different periods of time, ranging from 0 to 20 seconds. The participants reported that they felt no different, regardless the amount of time they held their hit. So, there’s no reason for you to hold your hit until you’re blue in the face.
Can I get High From Eating Straight Cannabis?
Here, I’m not referring to edibles. Some stoners have said that eating dried cannabis has gotten them high. Eating raw cannabis can get you a little high, but it would be a huge waste. THC has to be heated before it can have any effect. This is because raw cannabis contains THCA, which is converted to THC when it is heated. Some of the THCA is converted to THC during the process of harvesting cannabis, but not enough that you can eat it and notice a difference. Another thing to keep in mind is that some growers use pesticides and you really don’t want to be eating that. If you want to eat your weed, stick to edibles.
So there you have it. Don’t eat your weed and don’t drink your bong water. There’s no reason to store your cannabis for a long period of time and if you find a long forgotten nug, feel free to smoke it. You don’t need to hold in your hit until you pass out, because you’ll get the same high, no matter how long you hold it in. The more you know, right?
